I promise it's just coincidence that we're currently singing the praises of Mean Girls in our tribute to the 25 great films we wouldn't have without Saturday Night Live, but it is a little funny that at the same time, New Line is working on a sequel to the teen comedy-- kind of. Producers Adam Shankman, Jennifer Gibgot and Jill Messick are teaming up for the film Mean Moms, which won't feature Regina George or girls wearing pink on Wednesday, but will be a grown-up version of basically the same idea.
The similarities come from the source material-- Mean Girls was based on Rosalind Wiseman's non-fiction book about high school cliques, Queen Bees and Wannabes, while Mean Moms will adapt Wiseman's following book Queen Bee Moms And King Pin Dads. According to Variety, Wiseman's book was intended to "help parents navigate between being overly passive and excessively protective."
Mean Moms will begin the way Mean Girls did, with a family moving to a new town and coping with an entirely unfamiliar social order. This time the star will be a happily married mother of two, coping with the world of "competitive parenting." Given the explosion of "mommy blogs" and the general sense that parents are freaking out a bit too much about their jobs, Mean Moms sounds topical and potentially hilarious-- though I'll bet you a million of Gretchen Weiner's Toaster Strudels it won't be as funny as Mean Girls.
