Mike Judge's Idiocracy Scrapped??
Crushing news for fans of genius Office Space creator Mike Judge. His next movie, Idiocracy, won't be appearing in a theater near you any time soon.
The movie had been slated for release in just a few weeks, so perhaps we should have known something was wrong. There's been absolutely no advertising for it, not a movie trailer, not even an officially released movie poster. In fact, unless you've heard me excitedly blathering on about it here on this site, there's a good chance most of you didn't even know Judge had finally made another flick.
Now, MTV is running a blurb which says the movie has been postponed indefinitely. Release dates shift, movies are delayed, but whenever something is postponed indefinitely, that's not a good sign. It usually either means the movie is so bad it's almost unmatchable, or it means the director is a crazy perfectionist and wants more time to finish his movie. For instance, see Darren Aronofsky and the tortured production of his soon-to-be-released (finally) movie The Fountain. Let's hope in the case of Judge and Idiocracy it's the latter. I find it hard to fathom that the next film from the guy who brought us Office Space could actually be that bad.
Unfortunately, all indications are that it may actually be the former. The movie may be total crap. MTV says that when and if the movie is released, it may only get a very limited theatrical run. Somebody, whether it's Judge or the studio, doesn't want the world to see this one. Bummer.
The movie stars Luke Wilson as slacker common man from our time who falls asleep and wakes up in a future where everyone has become so dumb that he's now the most intelligent person on Earth. It sounds like a great opportunity for blistering Judge satire. Let's hope he uses this extra time to get it right.
