Mrs. Doubtfire 2 Is In The Works
Chris Columbus' Mrs. Doubtfire was such a gigantic hit in 1993 it's kind of amazing that we don't already have a sequel. Made for a paltry $25 million (I guess it's not that expensive to cover Robin Williams in prosthetics and make-up) the film managed to make not only $219 million domestically, but an additional $222 million at the foreign box office - totaling nearly $450 million internationally. It would seem that somebody over at Fox finally took a look at these numbers, because now part two is on the way.
The Wrap has learned from sources close to the project that a Mrs. Doubtfire 2 is now in the works at Fox 2000, and that both Columbus and Williams are set to return. David Berenbaum, who got his big break scripting Elf in 2003 and followed it up with The Haunted Mansion, Zoom and The Spiderwick Chronicles, has been hired to pen the script. At this time no plot details seem to be available - but that's not a huge surprise given how new the project seems to be.
The original film was based on the novel "Alias Madame Doubtfire" by Anne Fine and told the story of an irresponsible actor and loving father named Daniel Hillard (Williams) going through a bitter divorce with his wife Miranda (Sally Field). Depressed that he won't have the opportunity to spend time with his children, Daniel orchestrates a ruse: with some help from his make-up artist brother, Daniel becomes Mrs. Iphegenia Doubtfire, a Scottish nanny who is hired to take care of Miranda's house and his own kids. The film also starred Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, Matthew Lawrence and Mara Wilson, as you can see in the trailer below:
Mrs. Doubtfire is considered a classic movie to anybody who grew up during the 1990s, but do we really need a sequel now? It's already been 21 years since the last movie, and by the time the production actually gets rolling it will be even later. Can't we just let some things be?
While I can't say I'm too thrilled about this development, how do you feel about a Mrs. Doubtfire 2? Answer our poll below:

Mrs. Doubtfire 2 is still very much in the earliest stages of development, but you can be sure that we will keep you updated on the project as it gets closer to becoming a reality.
