The Ocean's Eleven Reboot May Have Found The Perfect Lead

There have been rumblings of an all female Ocean’s Eleven reboot for a while now, but it seems that the project is taking off with Gary Ross signing on to direct. It also seems like the Hunger Games director isn’t coming alone. Because it now appears that his Hunger Games lead Jennifer Lawrence is coming along for the ride, as the actress is on the short list to play a lead role in the film.

According to the Tracking Board, X-Men: Apocalypse star Jenifer Lawrence is on the producers' short list to be a lead in the all female Ocean’s Eleven movie. Gary Ross will be co-writing the screenplay along with directing the film. Sandra Bullock is already attached to play the lead role in the film, and rumor has it that Lawrence would be her right-hand woman. Seeing as how Lawrence likes to reteam with directors, just look at her frequent collaborations with David O. Russell, then it’s likely we will hear an official casting announcement soon.

The most interesting thing to note, as the Tracking Board points out, is that this new movie is reportedly not a reboot, but a continuation of the events from the previous George Clooney led trilogy (which is itself a remake). It’s a spinoff rather than a reboot, like the all-female Ghostbusters movie. Sandra Bullock is reportedly playing Danny Ocean’s sister (crime runs in the family, I suppose) and will be forming her own team of criminals to steal a priceless necklace from the Met Ball and frame a crooked gallery owner. So, Bullock will be the new George Clooney while Jennifer Lawrence will be the Brad Pitt character. Add nine more ladies and then you’ve got a movie. Fingers crossed that Bullock’s Eleven meet Clooney’s Eleven for a massive Ocean’s Twenty Two crossover.

The producers are probably hoping to stuff this movie with enough A-list star power to rival the Clooney films, though I think one could make a solid argument that star power doesn’t have anywhere near the same draw to theaters as it used to. It’s also the latest film working with the all-female angle, following the example of Ghostbusters and the potential all-female Expendables movie.

This could potentially be a very cool movie, though it really depends on how the cast turns out. Are you excited for this movie and Jennifer Lawrence’s involvement, or will this inspire a Ghostbusters level of hate? Sound off in the comments below.
