Oui, The Smurfs 2 Will Hit Blu-ray And DVD In December
The Smurfs 2 pulled in good numbers at the box office this summer, and if you or (more importantly) your kids failed to catch the flick in theaters, you’ll be given a second opportunity to catch Raja Gosnell’s film fairly soon. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is putting together a nice home entertainment release, and the company is banking on the film doing well around the holidays. With that in mind, the company is bringing The Smurfs 2 to Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital on December 3.
In the second film in the Smurfs franchise, the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) creates two Smurf look-a-likes, hoping that the can capture Smurf-essence. However, the key to harnessing the magic of the Smurfs lies in the lovely Smurfette, who knows the secrets to turning the new characters, Hackus and Vexy (Christina Ricci and J.B. Smoove), into real Smurfs. She’s kidnapped and taken to Paris, and the Smurfs are forced to head to the foreign country to get Smurfette back. Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays also star.
Sony Pictures Animation always does a really nice job of putting together kid friendly home entertainment sets, and if your kids did enjoy the movie, some of the bonus features should be super exciting. For Halloween, Sony put together a new animated mini-movie about the loveable crew of Smurfs called “The Legend of Smurfy Hollow.” That set hit DVD back in September (and can be bought cheaply on Amazon), but if you haven’t purchased it, it will come as a part of both the 3D Blu-ray and Blu-ray sets. Other Blu-ray set extras include featurettes focusing on the new characters and some basics, like deleted scenes.
Unfortunately, if you nab a DVD copy of the film, your family will get fewer bonus features. Normally, I would say no biggie, but that mini-movie should actually be a special extra. Besides, while Blu-ray 3D copies retail a little more expensively at $55.99, Blu-ray copies retail for $40.99 and DVD copies are similarly priced at $39.99. Might as well pay just a little extra for a lot of extras. The mini-movie has a run time of 22 minutes while the feature film has a runtime of 105 minutes. You can pre-order any of The Smurfs 2 copies over at Amazon, or check out the full list of extras, below.
