Every high school boy probably fantasizes at some point about either being s super spy or hooking up with a hot exchange student, but why not do both at once? Wish-fulfillment reaches a whole new level in Joe Schreiber's young adult novel Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick, and because the movies are the place where wish-fulfillment gets multi-million dollar budgets, the film rights have been snapped up by Paramount.
According to Deadline the book hasn't even set a publishing date yet-- it sold to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt last Friday-- but paramount was already aggressively bidding for the rights. It's possible that Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will hop on board as producers, either because they really like the material or the studio simply assumes they can constantly spin young-adult gold.
The story follows a high school kid whose parents take in an Eastern European exchange student, appearing homely and boring at first but eventually revealing herself as an assassin when the two visit a New York City nightclub. It's worth noting here that Josh Schwartz is also the co-creator of the NBC series Chuck, which has essentially the same premise. So yes, it seems likely that Paramount picked up the rights specifically so Schwartz could tackle it. Man, they probably ought to go ahead and get an actual deal set up, don't you think?
