Because Edgar Wright's Ant-Man was announced all the way back in 2006, we've spent years and years reporting endless rumors about actors who could potentially play the titular character. Now that the film is only a few months away from starting production, however, the rumors are going to get even more frequent, and that all kicks off today. Sources have told Variety that Marvel is starting to get serious about finding a role to play the incredible shrinking superhero and are now considering Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd for the part.
According to the trade, there is a possibility that a third actor could enter into the race for the part, but that for now Gordon-Levitt and Rudd are the two "main contenders." Both are expected to go in and meet with both Marvel executives and Wright one more time before the choice is made. The Ant-Man movie has become a bigger priority at the studio ever since it was revealed last month that the film's release date was being pushed up from November 6, 2015 to July 31, 2015. This means that the production will have to start some time in the first half of next year in order to make sure there is enough time to complete post-production work and have the finished film ready on time for its release date.
First introduced in 1962 and created by the awesome two-some of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Ant-Man is the alter-ego of scientist Hank Pym. Discovering a set of subatomic particles that he dubs "Pym Particles," the brilliant inventor builds a suit that gives him the ability to shrink down to the size of an insect. The hero is often linked in comic book lore with Janet Van Dyne a.k.a. The Wasp, who is both Pym's wife and a fellow member of The Avengers.
What makes this casting rumor really interesting is that Gordon-Levitt and Rudd aren't really seen as the same kind of performers, generally speaking. For starters, Rudd is more than a decade older than his possible competition and has never had any action experience. Gordon-Levitt, meanwhile, not only has action movie credentials, but has even done a comic book film before, having played a key role in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. He was also one of the actors who was reportedly considered to play Star-Lord in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, though that part ultimately went to Chris Pratt.
