I don’t care much for soccer (if you are reading this from outside the United States, please insert the word “futbol” every time you see the word “soccer.”) I know that puts me out of touch with the rest of the world, but so be it. It’s just not interesting and when I watch highlights they always talk about teams advancing to the next round for things like fewest bottles of Gatorade drunk or most penalty kicks that hit the cross bar and bounced up instead of down. But I do remember Pelé, the great Brazilian soccer star who led his country to three World Cup titles and also briefly popularized the sport here in the States back in the 1970s.
The Hollywood Reporter says that in Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pelé’s real name) has signed on to be represented by the William Morris Agency. One project that his new agents are trying to get off the ground is a movie about his life and career. There are no details at this point, but his exploits as a national icon and athletic star are certainly worthy of a dramatic film. Or, we could all just break out our copies of Victory and watch Pelé and Sly Stallone beat the crap out of those Nazi stooges.
