Let’s be honest, Piranha 3D should have sucked. A lot. But somehow, through a script that relished its B-movie premise and Jerry O’Connell acting like a wild man, it ended up being a damn good time. Christopher Lloyd playing a mad scientist also helped. Thankfully, it set itself up very nicely for a sequel, and not only has that sequel been given a green light, it’s already gotten a release date.

According to Coming Soon, Piranha 3DD will begin its theatrical run on September 16th, 2011. As of right now, that would put it opposite the new Johnny English movie and Straw Dogs, the crime drama starring Kate Bosworth and James Marsden. I’d say this sets up nicely, but I won’t for two reasons. First, this is almost a year away, which means there's plenty of time for new additions and flip-flops, and second, it’s highly unlikely a similar-themed movie will come along. People likely to see Piranha 3DD are likely to do it regardless of whether a few other non-fish massacre movies show up as competition.

John Gulager will direct from a script by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunston. If you’re keeping score, those aren’t the same guys that did the first one. That makes me less excited but still down enough to see it.
