With the release of both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger only a few months away and The Avengers scheduled to begin production in April, the next couple years are going to be filled to the brim with plenty of Marvel news. Thanks to the revelation at Comic Con, however, casting won't really be one of the issues...except in the case of Ant-Man. While he is the only key member of The Avengers that won't be featured in Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble film, Edgar Wright's script for a solo movie has been bouncing around for months and could very well start production in the next year. We've already heard plenty of rumors that have never been substantiated, specifically the one about Firefly star Nathan Fillion taking the part, but now we have a new rumor emerging - and it's one of Fillion's former co-stars.
CBM has posted an anonymous email from a reader who claims that he is "close to the production of Edgar Wright's Ant-Man movie" (aren't we all?) and says that it is actually Alan Tudyk who has landed the role not only in the solo movie, but also a cameo after the credits in The Avengers that will show both him and his character's wife, Janet Van Dyne, turning into Ant-Man and The Wasp, respectively. The email says that they will be in the midst of building the villain known as Ultron when the transformation occurs, and that Ultron will be the main villain of the solo film.
Let's start the debunking process, shall we? First off, CBM says in their article that they have pushed back publishing this email for nearly a month, and that even they don't really give it any credence. Secondly, when I spoke with Edgar Wright back in July, he said that the film he has written is an origin story and that the story's chronology doesn't fit in with The Avengers timeline. As for Tudyk, the writer of the email seems to take Joss Whedon's comments about Fillion as fact, despite the fact that even Fillion denied the story. Something tells me that someone "close to the production" might know that. While Marvel certainly could do worse than Alan Tudyk as Ant-Man, I wouldn't put too much stock in this story.
