Red State: Less Talk, More Filling

People typically expect a few things from a Kevin Smith movie: sex jokes, geek references, and really snappy banter. Apparently his new attempt at moving into new territory is going to be a little different from those expectations, as Smith announced via News Askew that the script for his horror flick, Red State, is finished.

Smith writes:

It is written.

Finished “Red State” today.

Shortest flick (in terms of page count) that I ever wrote. Least amount of dialogue, too (not to say there’s no dialogue; just that there’s about half as much as I normally write).

Unlike any other script I’ve ever authored, to say the least. Very fucked up. If I’d never said anything about it in the press and put it out under a pseudonym, I doubt anyone would ever connect me with it.

Can’t wait to shoot it.

So, Smith is branching out with something unlike anything else he’s written. The last time he tried that was Jersey Girl and he was crucified for it thanks to the “Bennifer” factor. I’m among those who feel like that response was unjustified, because Jersey Girl is a pretty darn good movie.

Needless to say, I’m excited to hear Red State won’t just be “Jay and Silent Bob Hack and Slash Some Folks”. I’m looking forward to seeing what Smith can do with a new genre, and if his script really is that different then my excitement is even greater. Despite his self-deprecation, Smith really has talent as a filmmaker and it’s good to see him stretching himself to new areas.
