It's not exactly an original idea, but the upcoming movie My One and Only definitely comes from a unique source. It's based on a story from actor George Hamilton's childhood, which he apparently told talk show host Merv Griffin at one point. Now Variety is reporting that good ol' squinty face Renee Zellweger will star in the film, which ensures this whole strange story will hit the big screen.

Zellweger will play Anne Devereaux, a glamorous woman living in the 1950s who drives up and down the East Coast with her sons in tow, hunting for a rich husband who can turn her life around. Hamilton was presumably one of the sons hanging out in the backseat. The indie movie was written by Charlie Peters and will be directed by Richard Loncraine, but with Merv Griffin putting his production power behind the movie, it's not entirely a low-budget trifle.

The entire concept of this movie sounds bizarre and old-Hollywood, given that George Hamilton and Merv Griffin aren't names you hear tossed around every day (unless it's during the end credits of Jeopardy!). I guess it could work, but even Renee Zellweger's name doesn't have the star power it used to. So is it an instant bomb? Or one of those things we'll look back on and think “With Merv Griffin and George Hamilton, how could it have failed?!”
