The Rock: Superhero or Supervillain?
I have to respect Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s decision to try and avoid being pigeonholed into the role of the action hero, even if I don’t care for some of his decisions (The Game Plan? really?). Still, the latest from The Rock’s camp is probably some of the best news we’ve heard from him lately, even if it does move him closer to that action hero role.
Johnson told MTV Movies that he’s currently in talks to join the cast of the adaptation of Shazam, which means The Rock could be headlining a super hero flick soon. What’s more interesting is the idea that he’s not locked into one role yet. In fact, he’s in talks for two roles, and wants his fans to decide which one he should pursue.
On the good side, Johnson is in talks to play Captain Marvel, the super hero alter ego of Billy Batson, who becomes Captain Marvel by uttering the word “Shazam,” which endows him with the powers of the gods: Solomon (wisdom), Hercules (strength), Atlas (stamina), Zeus (power), Achilles (courage), and Mercury (speed) – SHAZAM, get it? If The Rock takes on the lead it would definitely be a role worthy of the former wrestling champion, putting him front and center in the movie.
But what about those of you who liked him in Doom with a villainous turn? Well, Captain Marvel is like just about every other hero out there and has a nemesis with similar powers and abilities. In fact, Captan Marvel’s arch-rival, Black Adam, once possessed the exact same powers until they corrupted him. This is also a role Johnson is in talks to play.
But Johnson doesn’t want to leave the choice to himself or director Pete Segal. Instead he wants fans to decide. "I think it's up to the fans, very specifically because they are passionate about the comic book, about the history and mythology [of the character]. They will be very vocal.” So, MTV Movie Blog is taking stock of which role the fans think is right for The Rock. Head over there to weigh in, but don’t leave us in the dark here. Cast your vote below and let us know whether you think Johnson should be good, evil, or stay the heck away from this project.
