Die-hard X-Men fans had a lot to complain about with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but nothing was as irritating as the treatment of Deadpool, the character played brilliantly by Ryan Reynolds but essentially shoved to the sidelines while Wolverine and Sabretooth clawed at each other the whole time.

We've known for a while that Reynolds would star as Deadpool in his own spin-off movie, but now, as he does press for the upcoming romantic comedy The Proposal, Reynolds is making big promises about how the character will be treated. Apparently Reynolds is not just a star, but a serious creative partner as well. "I’m such a huge fan of the character. [...] I get to be the authentication police, in a weird way. To their credit — the studio’s credit — they want to make an authentic Deadpool movie; they want to make it as close to the source material as possible.”

And Reynolds is backing up that promise with some details. "“He’s going to be the Merc with the Mouth, [we’re going to give] all those answers that everyone wants. He’s going to have the scarred-up face, he’s going to be in the suit — and, it’s going to be incredible.”

Should we trust this guy? Uh, maybe. Reynolds really does seem dedicated to the character, and definitely has a lot invested in making his big starring superhero debut as good as possible. But then again, Fox learned with Wolverine that you can do essentially whatever you want with a character and still make bank. We've speculated that, with their attempts to get Ridley Scott back for the Alien prequel, Fox might be moving in a more character-friendly, director-driven direction. If Ryan Reynolds and his X-Men fandom are really helping make that happen, then we'll all be better off for it.
