STILLS: Summer of Love
It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a good lesbian obsession movie. Actually, it’s been awhile since I’ve seen any kind of lesbian movie. While our airwaves and theaters are flooded with well muscled, finely toned representations of overly gay men, lesbians are represented by Ellen Degeneres and “The L-Word”. It just doesn’t seem fair.
Not that Hollywood doesn’t love lesbians. Studios are quick to throw Charlize Theron and Penelope Cruz together for a quick romp in Head in the Clouds, as long as there’s a beefy man love interest somewhere in the picture. Well, I guess Stuart Townsend is beefy anyway.
That’s alright, this is why we have Great Britain… for true blue lesbians. Summer of Love debuted at the struggling Edinburgh International Film festival this year, and came away with the top prize. Described as a tale of deception and obsession, the press release says that the movie “charts the emotional and physical hothouse effects that bloom one summer for two young women”. The trailer makes what’s going on seem awfully familiar, like a snapshot from a certain film in Peter Jackson’s earlier career, except less low budget and slicker.
I don’t know if this will be another pile of exploitative crap or something legitimately good, but it’d be nice to have something to sit on my shelf next to Kissing Jessica Stein as a seriously well done all female love picture made in the past decade. I’m sure now I’ll get tons of emails suggesting films I’ve overlooked. Bring it on.
Anyway, we’ve got a stack of pictures from the upcoming Summer of Love flick for you. I’ve posted them below along with a link to the film’s trailer in Quicktime. Take a look and decide if you think it’s worth a shot.
