Scary Movie 5 Begins Production, Simon Rex Among The Returning Cast
While Anna Faris won't be returning to reprise her role as the beautiful but accident-prone Cindy Campbell for Scary Movie 5, it looks like Simon Rex will be back for the sequel. Back from the dead? Or back as a new character? That part's unclear, but his name was mentioned among the list of returning actors, along with Charlie Sheen and Molly Shannon.
It's been six years since the last Scary Movie film arrived in theaters. Given the number of horror films that have been made since then, director and co-writer David Zucker should have plenty to work with for the fifth film in the Wayans Brothers-founded franchise, which parodies scary movies. BlackFilm.com posted an update on the feature, which is set to arrive in theaters next spring, stating that Scary Movie 5 has begun production in Atlanta, and mentioned that Simon Rex was among the actors returning to the film, joining Ashley Tisdale, Terry Crews, Marisa Saks, Erica Ash and Lindsay Lohan.
Rex's character George was introduced in the third film as the love interest to Anna Faris' Cindy. As of the fourth film, George was dead, but he appeared in flashback. Without Faris' Cindy, it should be interesting to see how George fits into the story here, assuming he's playing George. Perhaps he'll be set up as a new character. But given the trend of undead/supernatural creatures in recent years, maybe George will return as a zombie or a vampire. Anything is really possible here.
The plot for the movie involves three dancers who are trying to get the lead in the "a new production from a snooty, aloof, imperious, and oversexed director." We also know that (spoiler alert!) Sheen and Lohan's characters will be killed off during the opening of the film.
On a related note, stand-up comedian Roland 'Lil Duval' Powell will be joining the movie. Unfortunately, Kevin Hart won't be back, as was rumored. (On the bright side, if you're a fan of Hart, you can catch him this Thursday night when he hosts MTV's VMA's.)
Scary Movie 5 is set to arrive in theaters April 19, 2013.
