About every thirty years or so, Martin Scorsese hauls his movie camera to film a concert by a seminal rock band. In 1978, he turned out The Last Waltz covering The Band’s first final concert. Last year he shot two performances of the hanging-around-way-to-long Rolling Stones tour and is turning it into the concert film, Shine a Light.
The documentary about Mick, Keith and the other guys was supposed to be released on September 21st, but The Hollywood Reporter now says that it will be postponed to next April. The reason for this has nothing to do with lack of interest in the film or the need to recut it to satisfy the band but in order to set up the promotional campaign. Riiiiiiiight.
The Rolling Stones were touring in support of their “A Bigger Bang” album and the nights shot by Scorsese included guest performances by Buddy Guy, Jack White, and Christina Aguilera. The Stones will obviously draw from the large and loyal fan base for this film, despite the fact that haven’t put out relevant popular music since around 1980 (quick, name a track from “A Bigger Bang” or try to hum something they’ve released since 1990.) As long as Jumpin Jack Flash is still a gas, gas, gas, the crowds will be there in April.
