Serenity Is Dead Forever
Big surprise folks, Serenity is dead. Alright, there was never much hope of a theatrical sequel, after all it was one of the biggest box office flops of 2005. But some fans had been holding on to some wild hope that somehow the movie would get a straight-to-video sequel based on DVD sales of the film.
Well forget it. It's flopped nearly as badly on DVD as it did in theaters, and now Joss Whedon has come right out and said his wannabe Science Fiction franchise is forever scrapped. On his blog Whedon says, "There's no sequel, no secret project regarding Serenity or somesuch and I'm not even sure how anyone thought there was talk there." He goes a little further, "So let's put that to bed and smother it with a pillow." Ouch. Joss sounds a little bitter.
Who can blame him? Serenity is one of the best movies that no one has ever seen, and it's about to be forever forgotten. Maybe ten years from now it'll be regarded as a cult classic, but right now it seems certain never to make inroads anywhere outside of the tiny, obsessive fanbase Joss has gathered around him. What a shame.
