There is absolutely no reason why anyone in Hollywood needs to come up with an original idea. There are plenty of foreign films, classic films, and old television shows to make and remake. Why try to come up with something new, they should just take an existing product and put a clock in it or something (d’oh!)
In keeping with the “no new ideas” plan, Variety says that writer/director Max Makowski will be soon start a remake of the 2005 Japanese action movie Shinobi for Universal. The Japanese movie is basically a remake of “Romeo and Juliet” and, frankly, that was a remake, too. So there really is nothing new under the sun, as Solomon so wisely intoned.
While the original movie took place in ancient Japan and the Montagues and Capulets were rival ninja clans, Makowski intends to set the remake in Hong Kong. The ninja gangs will be replaced by multinational security forces. The boy-girl love story among warring factions will be retained and provide something to new to anyone who hasn’t seen West Side Story or any of dozens of other movies.
