Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants probably didn’t deserve a sequel. But it’s getting one, because one of the stars, America Ferrera, landed a hit TV show and got famous in the interim. So here come the pants again, traveling, and being worn, and then traveling some more.
Ok, maybe that’s not a very accurate plot synopsis. I haven’t seen it. I won’t see it, and if I’m lucky I’ll never see the sequel. I’m sure though, it’ll be fantastic. America loves… America. Because she’s not pretty, and when we all pretend that she is, we all feel better about ourselves. I don't mean to be cruel, but when we start calling things that are not, pretty, we demean the entire idea of beauty. If ugly things start becoming beautiful, then beautiful loses all meaning. The world needs ugly, if only to have something to compare pretty against! Television could do with a lot more ugly on it. I'm all for it. Let's just not demean the dignity and importance of ugly by pretending it's pretty.
America Ferrera is rich and popular. That should be enough for her. She's better off than most of us at least, who are neither pretty nor wealthy nor particularly well liked. Spend a day in my shoes America, then come talk to me about self-esteem.
