Sony Waters Down DaVinci
Is Sony Pictures altering their movie adaptation of The Da Vinci Code to cater to the Catholic Church? Of course they are, according to Cinematical. Maybe this sort of thing should no longer be a surprise.
"[Sony] studio officials have consulted with Catholic and other Christian specialists on how they might alter the plot of the novel to avoid offending the devout." That’s a quote from the New York Times. Now I haven’t read the book, nor am I ever likely to. The Bible adequately fills my religious fiction needs. But “The Da Vinci Code” is one of the best selling things ever to roll of a printing press… and it got that way by being controversial. The Catholic Church has been railing against it since its first shelf appearance. If Sony didn’t want to make a controversial film, a film that’ll piss off the Pope and his cronies, then why would they pick up The Da Vinci Code to begin with? You have to believe that it wasn’t their original intention to water down the novel.
So I wonder… what’s changed since they first started making the film? Because the script has been done for some time now. They’re filming the thing! Are they under some sort of new, holy-roller pressure? Or has Sony simply gone completely mad? Maybe they can invent a fake film critic to explain things to us.
