The idea of Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson playing fighting backup singers from a soul group makes me smile. As we noted back in September, they will co-headline Soul Men playing singers who haven’t spoken in 20 years but must travel to a tribute concert in honor of their former lead singer. The only thing missing at the time was someone to direct this duo through their many song and dance moves. Now Variety says they have one, Malcolm Lee.
Lee, cousin of a more famous movie director with the last name Lee, has previously helmed such wildly successful films as Roll Bounce, Undercover Brother, and The Best Man. He joins the creative team of Robert Ramsey and Matthew Stone who wrote the script. They also wrote the scripts for the terrible Man of the House and the even worse Life. Hopefully, the star power and charisma of the two leads will be able to overcome the film's less than stellar behind-the-scenes personnel. Shooting begins in January.
