State of Fletch
MTV is reporting Garden State’s Zach Braff will be taking on the title part for the upcoming Fletch Won, a sequel/re-imagining of one of Chevy Chase’s most popular roles.
The Fletch movie had been on Kevin Smith’s back burner until recently, when it was announced that Smith would not be directing the film after all. The parting of Smith from the project is supposedly amicable, although the quick announcing of Braff implies Harvey Weinstein (who currently holds the rights to the Fletch franchise) wants to get moving on the project. After all, we’ve gone from no news on the project to suddenly having no director and a new star (Smith had intended for the role to be played by his old standby Jason Lee who is currently busy with “My Name is Earl”).
Although Braff has been announced as the new Fletch, there is no word on a new director, although it is being rumored that Bill Lawrence, creator of Braff’s hit TV show “Scrubs”, is a prime candidate to handle the script. From there who knows. After the success of Garden State as well as Braff’s directorial duties on “Scrubs” I’m a bit surprised he hasn’t been selected to direct as well.
