Last month there was a rumor floating around that Robert Rodriguez will be directing the remake of Clash of the Titans planned for next year. It was quashed almost immediately and to put a final dagger in its heart, Variety says it will actually be Steve Norrington sitting in the director’s chair.
Norrington previously directed the abysmally received League of Extraordinary Gentleman and the slightly better received Blade. His background is in special effects and the original 1981 Clash of the Titans is best known as being the ultimate example of the stop-motion type of special effects used primarily in the 1950’s and 60’s by Ray Harryhausen. No word if Norrington will pay homage to the original or use current technology to create his world of gods and monsters.
Nothing about this movie gives me any cause for excitement. The director hasn’t proven that big budget/special effects heavy action is something he can handle and the source material wasn’t anything impressive to begin with. Lawrence Kasdan wrote (or re-wrote) the script and he knows what he's doing, so I guess that's something. At least this version won’t have Harry Hamlin’s wooden acting.
