Sundance Monstrosity Splice May Be Getting A Wide Release

Splice is a Sundance movie that I missed at this year's festival not because I wasn't interested or couldn't get in, but I was absolutely terrified of it. A movie described in the festival guide as "a contemporary dissection of the genetic-engineering dilemma," about Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody creating a human-creature mutant, it was just too much for me to handle, even when everyone i knew at the festival was raving about it.

Now I have a second chance. Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Joel Silver and his Dark Castle label are about to close a deal to distribute the film, with plans to release it wide this summer on 3,000 screens. That's by far the largest distribution plan for a Sundance film this year, and what seems like a crazy gamble for a movie that may very well redefine the word "bizarre." But every studio went to Sundance this year looking for the next Paranormal Activity, and if you're gonna make that happen twice, you've got to take a risk in there somewhere.
