While we now know that Henry Cavill is Superman, Michael Shannon is General Zod, Amy Adams is Lois Lane, Kevin Costner is Pa Kent, and Diane Lane is Ma Kent, what we still don't know about Zack Snyder's Man of Steel is the story. While we can cut and paste what we know about the characters that are involved and what we've learned from the comics and the Richard Donner movies, there has yet to be any real indication of where the story starts and where it ends. Finally, some of that information has slipped out.
Let's start from the top, shall we? Lane recently spoke with E! about her upcoming role in the Superman flick, and in addition to talking about the security surrounding the script - she was locked in a room and was only given three hours to read it - she also indicated that we will indeed, as has been previous rumored, be seeing another Superman origin story. Said the actress, "I'm really not allowed to talk much about it, I think, but it does cover the entire range of years, from infancy on."
As vague as that statement is, Latino Review has learned from their unnamed source quite a few more details about where the story begins. According to the site, the movie will indeed be showing a version of Krypton, but it will be unlike what we've seen in previous films. Rather than being full of crystals, the source says that the planet "will PROBABLY look like the Coruscant skyline from Star Wars." They've also been informed that Superman's birth parents, Jor-El and Lara, will both be featured in the movie, and that Daniel Day-Lewis was looked at for the paternal role. The site also doubles back on a rumor that they launched in February, saying that there is a Kryptonian villainess, but it's not Ursa. Rather, it will be Faora Hu-Ul, whom Ursa was actually based on in Donner's Superman movies.
I must say that I am pretty bummed about this. If there's an origin story that we really don't ever need to hear again, it's Superman. I don't think there's a single person on Earth that is unaware of how that story begins, so really all the script is doing is wasting a good thirty minutes of runtime. I understand that this is a reboot and that for that reason they may feel compelled to start from the very beginning, but it really is unnecessary.
