Tarantino Turns Down Hawaii Five-O
It looks like the latest classic television show to be turned into a movie may be Hawaii Five-O. The news comes from Quentin Tarantino, who revealed to WENN that Warner Brothers offered him the directing gig.
Call me crazy, but for some reason it sounds like the sort of thing that might be right up QT’s alley. But, he’s already turned it down. Tarantino says, “My producing partner at the time Lawrence Bender was hanging out with some dude from Fox or Warners or whatever, and they said I should stop working on what I was doing, because I'd be so into this.” Not only was he not into it, but he hates it. "I tried to watch the old TV show, but it sucks. I don't even like Hawaii.”
I can understand not wanting to adapt yet another in a long-line of old television show to movie adaptations, but who hates Hawaii? Sounds like his producing partner was hoping for some time lying on the beach.
The original television version of Hawaii Five-O was a pretty standard detective show, except that it took place in Hawaii. In the modern pop-culture lexicon it is probably best remembered for its rockin theme music, and for the catchphrase “Book him Danno”. Other than that, I’m with Tarantino. The show kind of sucked.
