The trailer for The Girlfriend Experience is remarkable, but not for the reasons you might expect-- mainstream debut of porn star Sasha Grey, next film by Steven Soderbergh, plenty of promises of sex and muscled bodies. No, it's remarkable because it is, to my knowledge, the first major film to have a trailer debut on Hulu. Hulu is the method of choice, of course, for viewing new episodes of 30 Rock and The Office, but it also makes an amazing and easy to use platform for trailers. Hopefully more studios will follow Soderbergh's lead.
Oh, but the movie. The trailer really just sets up what we already knew about the film-- it's about a high-priced call girl (Grey) who lives with her personal trainer boyfriend. It gives no real sense of the plot or even whether or not she likes her job, but works as an effective teaser, with its low-budget look, New York locations, and beautiful people. The Girlfriend Experience debuts May 22, but I'll be seeing at some point during the Tribeca Film Festival, so hopefully we'll know soon how much to look forward to Soderbergh's latest.
