I spent two hours standing out in the snow at Sundance earlier this year to see Luke Wilson’s new movie Henry Poole is Here… and never got in. At the time I was somewhat miffed, but now having seen the trailer for it I’m kind of glad I ended up wandering off back to the hotel instead.
The movie’s first trailer is here, and apparently it’s a film about how imagining you see the face of Jesus on a wall or in a piece of toast can make your life better… instead of making you a soft-headed idiot blubbering over a slice of burnt grilled cheese. Luke Wilson plays the downtrodden skeptic, who of course must be a miserable, bitter, drunk (because anyone who isn’t into believing in the invisible must be), and is then transformed by the power of faith when his crazy Mexican neighbor starts praying to a stain on his wall.
I’m sure some of you will be in to this; personally I find it condescending and offensive on nearly every level. Those of you who think this looks awesome will no doubt feel similarly when I finally make my first movie: a film about how a miserable old hag who goes to church all the time has her life transformed by logic and reason, when she’s freed from the bonds of mysticism and superstition by an atheist neighbor who teachers her that this whole god thing is a load of crap.
