Trailer Trash

Movie trailers aren't just a way to advertise something. Like a great poster trailers have almost become their own trashy art form. Hollywood runs on advertising overdrive 24 hours a day. Trailers come out, some of them we get, some come unhitched and end up here, in Trailer Trash. We sort out the Star Wagon's from the Camperland rentals and keep only the best.

The Namesake

Harold's pot-smoking buddy Kumar gets the lead role in a serious movie about discovering his heritage? That's what you'll get with The Namesake, and the trailer, surprise surprise, is really very good. Kal Penn was totally wasted in Superman Returns, in fact he hasn’t had many worthwhile roles at all since Harold & Kumar. This could be his break… if anyone sees it. Saw III

The new teaser for Saw III is really just a watered down version of the first full trailer. This is the ad they show for audiences they think might be a little squeamish. They've brought in Mr. Movie Voice to narrate it, and most of the gruesome, chained up women images from the first trailer are missing. If you're interested, here it is.

Jackass: Number Two

The second trailer for Jackass: Number Two is up over on MTV's Overdrive in the horrible streaming formats they're known for. The formatting may be crap, but the trailer is actually pretty good. I'm loathe to admit I'm interested in seeing a Jackass movie, but the thing that even if you hate these guys the movie works for you since it's all about seeing them tortured, beat up, and broken. Johnny Knoxville gored by a bull? Count me in.

Fur

Picturehouse Films may be taking their name a little too literally. This is their second film this year on the subject of photography, the first being the excellent but virtually ignored Bettie Page biopic The Notorious Bettie Page. Fur stars Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. in the imaginary story of artist Diane Arbus, as she transforms herself from a boring housewife into an experimental artist. The trailer is beautifully shot, and anything with Kidman and Robert Downey is worth a look.

Curse of the Golden Flower

It's the latest multi-colored, imported Chinese period piece from the people who brought you Hero and House of Flying Daggers. Like those films, it looks absolutely beautiful. Chow Yun Fat stars, and if you're looking to fill your hunger for martial arts and swords this is probably the movie to do it with this year.
