Uncle Avi Wants You To Love Captain America
Our dear friends over at Film Rotation have picked up on word that Avi Arad and friends are busily preparing yet another entry to the comic book genre, only this time it's everyone's favorite spokesman for patriotism, Captain America.
According to Arad, "Without giving too much away, obviously there'll be a little bit of the origin and then we come into our real world. What makes Captain America such a compelling character is that it allows you to judge history so you see where he came from and you see what he stood for." If that's what makes the character compelling then it's amazing more people aren't watching the History Channel.
Arad continues, "One of the things our movie is going to deal with is what happened in 60 years," says Arad. "Which world was better? Sixty years ago or now? Within, obviously, a kick-ass plot and all the stuff that you've come to expect from a superhero movie."
Loosely translated, stand by for a two hour Hollywood style PSA on why they think America's current politics suck and how Donald Rumsfeld would never have been able to lead the military against someone as cunning as Hiter. Um, Arad, would that kick-ass plot be anything like what we got from Elektra or The Punisher? If that's what you think we've come to expect, you might want to go somewhere beyond the graphic novel section of Barnes and Noble to conduct your polling.
I'll admit, Avi has had a hand in bringing some pretty great comic movies to life over the last several years, namely the X-Men and Spiderman films. However, he's currently slated to produce nearly a dozen different comic movies over the next three years ranging from Iron Man to Ghost Rider to Ant Man. Where's it going to end?
FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS DECENT AND GOOD IN THE CINEMA PLEASE STOP INTRODUCTING NEW COMIC BOOK CHARACTER MOVIES.
I know that statement may cause nostril flaring amongst you comic addicts out there, but you should be the ones most concerned by Hollywood's glut. It's causing all kinds of oversaturation and frankly most of what's being made is boring drivel. It's not doing the characters or the stories justice and while I could personally care less I know the fans probably feel they deserve better. We the general movie going public could use the break as well.
