After stepping away from Hollywood for more than a decade, director Adrian Lyne is finally ready to make his big comeback. Deadline is reporting that the filmmaker best known for libidinous titles like 9 1/2 Weeks, Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal, Unfaithful and the 19967 remake of Lolita is now set to direct Deep Water, an adaptation of the 1957 Patricia Highsmith suspense novel.
The project has actually been floating around Hollywood for a few years now, and previously had Mike Nichols attached to direct. Zach Helm, who previous scripted movies like Stranger Than Fiction and Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, wrote the script, which centers on a husband who tries to save his marriage by letting his wife sleep with other men. This turns out to be a problem, however, when all of the men that she sleeps with end up dead.
The latest report says that the people behind the production have already been having conversations "with a big star," but the name hasn't been disclosed. Those talks could determine how the project moves forward, as the actor's schedule will tell them when they can start production.
Highsmith's work has had a long history in Hollywood, the two most notable titles being Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train and Anthony Minghella's The Talented Mr. Ripley. Most recently, writer/director Hossein Amini has adapted her novel The Two Faces of January, a project that co-stars Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen and Oscar Isaac. The film doesn't currently have a U.S. release date, but is expected some time later this year.
