Voltron Gets A Director
Hot on the heels of the news that the Voltron movie had been handed off from Fox to a more minor distributor with smaller budgets, comes word that they’ve hired a director. According to LatinoReview some guy named Max Makowski is directing it.
Who is he? Um he once directed an episode of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Oh and he’s partially responsible for that upcoming remake of Kung Fu. Worried? You probably should be. Voltron is not going to be Transformers. This sounds like exactly the kind of director you’d hire if you’re trying to do a movie on the cheap, which rumor has it is exactly what they’re doing with this property. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the next thing we hear is that it’s going direct to dvd.
Maybe that would be a shame. I did sort of like the Voltron script. But much as I loved the Voltron world as a kid, I still have a really hard time seeing it as a legitimate, serious summer movie. The whole concept, even done up in post-apocalyptic grit in the script Justin Marks finished, is still pretty silly. What will Queer Eye guy Max Makowski make of it, and will Voltron wear fashionable slacks? LR claims he’s some sort of hot commodity, the next Zach Snyder in fact. We’ll see.
