The Wackness Trailer - Updated With Future Plans
The first trailer for what is by far, my favorite movie of the year so far, has popped up online. In case you’ve missed all my other cheerleading, it’s called The Wackness… and please don’t let this very mediocre trailer keep you from seeing it.
When the movie was bought by Sony Pictures Classics those who, like me, saw it at Sundance went into instant panic mode. Sony Pictures Classics has a terrible record when it comes to getting movies like this seen, and now it looks like our predictions of doom and gloom may be coming true, because this trailer does nothing for me… and I already love the movie. How the heck is it going to convince someone new to see it? Oh it’s not an awful trailer, but it barely even hints at the broad appeal this movie actually has. The Wackness deserves to be, and could be the next Little Miss Sunshine… but it’s not going to be with a blah trailer like this.
It doesn’t help that SPC has decided to make the thing exclusively available through MTV Overdrive, the absolute worst way to watch any movie trailer online. Check the trailer out here, and then don’t let it keep you from seeking this thing out when it finally shows up in theaters this July.
UPDATE! A little more information on SPC's marketing plans for The Wackness. They've contacted me to let us know that this is only the first of 4 teasers being planned for the film, they have three more coming, each of which will focus on a different aspect of the movie and targe different people (the first of these we can expect in 2 weeks). Once those are all out in the open, they plan to run one, final, full-length trailer. SPC also assures me that I'll like the next trailers a lot better. I hope so, I'm rooting for this thing. Whether or not those will also debut on the absolutely awful MTV Overdrive is unclear, but they do assure me that the current trailer is (thankfully) only exclusive to MTV Overdrive for a couple more days, then they'll have it up on Apple.com and Yahoo.
