War of the Worlds
I opened my email inbox today and was mildly surprised. Besides the normal amount of worthless spam (although I appreciate the concern about my “girth”), I found something rather interesting; a press release. The good souls at Pendragon Pictures were pleased to announce the release of their “War of the Worlds” movie. Their release? Yes, besides the current Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise project, Pendragon has completed a version that is an authentic adaptation of the H.G. Wells classic.
To be honest, this is the version of the book I would rather watch. A movie set in turn of the century England just like the book. However, I have a few reservations. For starters, I’m not sure they have enough money to make this as good as it can be. The press release talks about having the pick of the litter amongst FX leaders, but I don’t buy it. If that’s the case, why do all the images they sent me have nary a special effect in them? The cast is also unknown to most people as is Director, Timothy Hines. But, don’t take that as a negative. This could be a good thing.
I hate to complain about the document itself, but I must add that I find the tone of their press release to be unprofessional at times. In the matter of paragraphs, they took unnecessary jabs at Michael Caine, Steven Spielberg, and Tom Cruise. Come on people, this isn’t 8th grade. Let’s have some decorum here! Just because they are big time names, doesn’t mean you have to put em down to make yourself feel better.
War of the Worlds, the Pendragon Pictures edition, hits theatres in the Spring of 2005, hopefully. It’s a shame they didn’t have a budget as big as a summer blockbuster. A faithful version of the H.G. Wells classic done right would be appreciated.
