We lost Superman
I was running late for work this morning, which in itself is no surprise. It seems like I walk in the door every morning with only seconds to spare. The reason for my lateness today was a new one, however; I'd been hit with the news of Christopher Reeve’s passing.
Christopher Reeve is best known for his role as Superman/Clark Kent. When it comes to playing dual personalities, Reeve got it. He was just as much Clark Kent as he was Superman. He knew it was more than just putting on a pair of glasses.
The day I heard about Reeve’s paralysis is a day that I won’t soon forget. I was nearly sick to my stomach at the thought. You almost ask yourself: How Superman can be injured? Then you remember he was also Clark Kent.
Thankfully, Reeve did not give up then and became a staunch support of spinal research. I strongly admired his desire to use his name to hopefully improve the lives of thousands. He could have withdrew from society and dealt with his paralysis privately; Superman didn’t do that.
Sadly after an almost ten year fight against paralysis, Reeve passed away Sunday at age 52. He fought paralysis for ten years but ultimately lost his personal battle. His struggle was not a hopeless one. He brought hope to thousands who could have given up. He helped raised money for spinal research when scientists needed it. I admire the man as much now as I did as a small child hoping to fly.
Many people idolize Superman. For me, the man behind the cape was the true superhero. God bless him and his family.
