America made its way back to the theaters this weekend, at least the portion of it that they weren't spending knocking each other over to be the first ones to get a $200 laptop at Wal-Mart. The box office made a healthy showing, but it's important to consider the fact that this was a holiday weekend. What do you do with all those house guests between Thanksgiving dinner and their plane flight home on Sunday afternoon? Go to the movies!
For your perusing pleasure (those of you who take pleasure in staring at numbers anyway) we've included both the standard 3 day weekend (Fri - Sun) and the 5 day weekend (Wed - Sun), which is worth considering since half the movies in the top ten opened last Wednesday. The only movie to show any difference between the two versions was Rent, which did far better prior to the actual weekend than it did overall. It nudged out Chicken Little to take the number 4 spot for the 5 day counts.
No surprise, Harry Potter took the number one spot again, but losing steam at the usual rate of around 50% ($101 million last week, $54 million this week). The big surprise was Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line which held on exceptionally well, making nearly as much this weekend as last. Potter can expect to stay on top next week, but Johnny will likely drop to number three in the presence of the only big release next weekend, Aeon Flux, starring Charliz Theron. It's a movie that doesn't look like it deserves the number 2 spot but as the only new movie out there next week it stands a good chance of taking it.
The five new releases this week couldn't steal Johnny or Harry's thunder, though they all made the top ten. Family friendly remake Yours, Mine and Ours took top honors among the new contenders with In The Mix and The Ice Harvest scrambling for the scraps at numbers 9 and 10.
Pride and Prejudice, which was supposed to open wide but only received around 1200 theaters, did fairly well per theater once again, but that wasn't enough to help it do any better than seventh place. No doubt it's release will widen a little more heading into the holiday season, but that likely won't be enough to keep it on the chart. It's a shame too...it's a great film, not unlike Crash, which you should really see if you haven't already.
Look for the box office to take a hit next weekend without much fresh meat on the market. But don't worry, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe opens the weekend after and looks to give Potter a run for his money for opening weekend take.
