Weekend Box Office: Furious 7 Takes Third Victory Lap, Paul Blart Sequel Does Way Better Than It Deserves
Furious 7 took another victory lap, holding the number one spot for a third weekend in a row. Adding $29 million this weekend, the top grosser in the franchise fell just short of the $300 million mark domestically and pushed past $825 million in foreign markets for an impressive $1.1 billion international total to date. That has pushed it into the number seven spot for all time international domestic sales.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 is currently sitting at an impressive 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it still managed a mediocre $24 million. That's down from the $31 million opening for the first Mall Cop, but still enough to stave off being a box office flop given the modest $30 million production budget.
Horror flick Unfriended landed at third place with $16 million, which is not only pretty good for a horror movie, but great returns for a movie made on a shoestring $1 to $2 million production budget.
Disney's traditional Earth Day documentary swung in at seventh place to the tune of $4 million. Monkey Kingdom's performance is on par with last year's Bears but still down from the $10 million opening enjoyed by Chimpanzee in 2012.
