It was a smorgasbord of new releases this weekend with everything from romance to military action thrillers hitting theaters across the country, but none of them came anywhere near Alice In Wonderland, now in its second weekend. Of course, none of them were released in 3D either.
Tim Burton's return down the rabbit hold took an easy number one again this weekend with a hefty $62 million. The movie sailed easily past the $200 million mark and is already over $400 million worldwide, sealing it safely in the black over its special effects heavy $200 million budget.
That’s good news for grubby handed studios who are looking for 3D movies to increase their bankroll but who are nervous about the cost. News came out this week that Disney was cutting off Robert Zemeckis’ motion capture animation department, which is one group that has been notorious pushers of 3D in the form of movies that have failed to make solid profit margins.
Matt Damon’s Green Zone got a lukewarm second place reception, banking only $14 million against its $100 budget. With only $9 million more from its international screenings, Green Zoneis looking to end up in the red.
Raunch-com She’s Out Of My League couldn’t break double digits, settling for $9.6 million and third place. Robert Pattinson proved he’s not quite so bankable when he’s not playing a vampire. His romantic drama Remember Me squeaked in at fourth place with only $8.3 million. Our Family Wedding fared even worse. The Carlos Mencia and Forest Whitaker vehicle slid in just behind month-old Shutter Island for a weak $7.6 million sixth place.
