This weekend Hannah Montana went head to head with herself to find out who was more popular, live concert Hannah the singer or scripted movie Hannah the actress. Turns out the masses like her just a little bit better when she's acting out a fake life story, but they don't pack out the theaters to see it.
Hannah Montana: The Movie drew $34 million to be the number one movie. That compared to the $31 million her live concert experience drew when it opened last year. The difference is how crowded the seats were. Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour debuted on less than 700 screens and played to full houses to the tune of more than $45,000 per theater. This new movie was welcomed into more than 3,000 but only made out with $10,000 in each one.
Seth Rogen's newest comedy Observe and Report came in at fourth place with $11 million. That's the second lowest cash opening for a Rogen flick. Hard to say whether audiences are getting tired of his raunch-com stylings or just weren't in the mood for a rated R repeat of Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
The Dragonball Phenomenon has always been a bigger deal abroad than in the states and Dragonball Evolution's debut reinforced that point. While the anime-turned-live-action movie has already drawn $25 million in international sales it was barely a blip on the US radar. With less than $5 million it landed quietly at eighth place.
