Zack and Miri made a porno and Molly Harley got haunted, but none of them had what it took to dethrone those crazy, musical-obsessed high school kids from the number one spots in theaters.
High School Musical 3 banked another $15 million this weekend, bringing its total to $61 million. As rated G movies go this one is enjoying success usually reserved for animated features. Maybe that's not so surprising since Zac Efron looks as close as humanly possible to a live-action anime character.
I don't care how much Kevin Smith or his fans whine about the film's treatment at the hands of the MPAA, Zack and Miri Make A Porno would pretty much have made the same amount of money for its debut whether it had been unrated, NC-17 or stripped all the way down to a G rating and renamed Tom and Jerry Bake Cookies.
Either you love Smith's sense of humor or he bores you to tears, and those in the first category always turn out, helping his movies consistently open between $8 million and $11 million (yes, even Jersey Girl). This time out the movie brought in $10 million to be the second place movie of the weekend.
The other new option in theaters this Halloween weekend was the abysmal Haunting of Molly Hartley. The latest contrived crap-fest trying to pass itself off as horror/thriller featuring twenty-somethings playing teens fell flat with the critics but somehow managed to pull together enough of a mind-numbed audience to make $6 million and fifth place on the chart.
