For a second weekend in a row newcomers had a cold reception at the box office. The top six from last weekend each held on to their respective places, dropping between 40%-60%, but still earning enough to stave off the competition.
Killing Them Softly bowed in with just $7 million, narrowly losing to 5 week-old Wreck-It Ralph. At seventh place the Weinstein offering is positioned to live up to its name, dying fast and quiet. But hey, after those Chanel commercials, can you blame audiences for not being ready to take Brad Pitt seriously?
Suffering from an absence of marketing and a release date more than a month too late, horror flick The Collection opened with a paltry $3 million, just sneaking into the top ten.
The closest thing to a winner among new releases was foreign entry Talaash. Despite only opening in 170 theaters it managed a solid $2 million. While that wasn't enough to clear the top ten it's a respectable showing and offers the hope for a rare feat: a foreign movie getting wide recognition in the domestic market.
