Summer 2010 has been a toxic waste site where movies are concerned, with less than a handful of worthwhile blockbusters and fist full after fist full of boring crap. So it should come as no surprise that Hollywood's traditional end-of-summer dump off is bigger and duller than ever.
Last week's number one The Expendables held on to the top spot for a second week in a row as five - count 'em - five new releases flopped around at the box office like fish in the bottom of a boat.
The two guys who brought you such mind numbing disasters as Epic Movie and Meet The Spartans (and whom I suspect suck helium all morning every morning and then try and write crappy scripts and direct crappier movies in the afternoon) released their latest cinematic plague Vampires Suck It opened at number two with $12.2 million. Despite the movie living up to critics' usual expectations of laughless idiot humor, it must have been hard for audiences to pass up a chance to see Twilight mocked on screen.
Bow Wow (the performer who a couple of years grew out of his previous nick name, Lil' Bow Wow) headlined the obscure flick Lottery Ticket which banked $11.1 million for fourth place. Not bad for a movie turned on a $17 million budget.
Piranha 3D, which in all its horrorific shamelessness is the first and only movie this summer that actually warrants being in 3D, slipped in at $10 million. The Nanny McPhee-quel Nanny McPhee Returns barely eeked out a spot at seventh place with a sad $8.1 million while the teaming of big name Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman for The Switch got swallowed up in eighth place with just $8.1 million.
