Michael Bay scored one of the worst openings for one of his movies this weekend, but you won't hear him complaining too much. Turns out this was also one of his cheaper movies (one of only three with a price tag less than $100 million). The $20 million debut was a comparably decent start against its non-special-effects-laden $26 million reported budget, and was enough to nab number on a quiet, pre-summer weekend.
It was a different story for romantic comedy The Big Wedding which turned out to be "The Big Flop". With just $7.5 million is settled for a dismal fourth place. Not exactly a box office coup for newcomer director Justin Zackham or any of the reasonably recognizable names slathered across the film's one sheet.
The latest Matthew McConaughey flick to hit theaters made a big splash. Mud, despite opening in just over 350 venues, banked a respectable $6,000 per theater for a $2 million total. That wasn't quite enough to break into the top ten, but it landed at eleventh just behind Jurassic Park 3D.
The box office buzz this weekend wasn't about domestic totals though, but instead focused on a franchise that American's won't even get to see for another week. Iron Man 3 saw almost $200 million in foreign markets this weekend. Not that anyone wasn't expecting it to be a huge summer hit here in the US, but the question is whether or not this means it will be able to top The Avenger's domestic opening records.
