Snow White and the Huntsman didn't exactly receive a fairy tale debut at the box office, but the latest cinematic retelling didn't come up short either. Earning over $56 million it easily took first place, but needs at least one more solid weekend to push into profitability against its weighty $170 million budget.
Meanwhile The Avengers hit two more major mile markers this weekend. With $552 million in domestic sales it surpassed The Dark Knight to become the third all-time highest grossing film. As well, with over $1.3 billion in sales world-wide it also pushed into the number three spot on that chart.
It has a long way to go and a very slim chance of topping the number two movie on both charts. Titanic holds a firm grip on its position with $658 million domestic and over $2.1 billion world-wide.
Under-marketed and critically panned, obscure history flick For Greater Glory opened in small release but managed the tenth place spot with $1.8 million.
