It may have been hammered by critics, but Valentine's Day was a hit with audiences this weekend. Perhaps it's fitting that a movie that only superficially manages the topic of love succeeded on a holidy that only superficially has anything to do with love.
With a first place $52 million opening it's not only the biggest ever V-Day weekend total (check out our list of the pseudo-holiday's top releases here), it's the third largest opening for the normally sleepy month of February.
Second spot Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief has been hailed as the next Harry Potter, but box office results didn't live up to the expectation. While Potter films usually enjoy opening weekends in nearing $100 million, Percy was barely able to muster $31 million. Given the film's $95 million budget, managing a profit could be tough to manage. That doesn't bode well for any potential sequels in the franchise which has four more books left.
In even worse financial shape is Benecio Del Toro's Wolfman which came in a close third place. At $30 million it has a long way to go to recover its heavy $150 million cost.
