Who Batman V Superman's R-Rated Cut Is Actually For

Without question, the most divisive superhero movie in recent memory – maybe even of all time – came in the form of Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. After years of anticipation, the film hit theaters in March to decidedly mixed reviews. Some fans considered it a revelation, while an equally vocal segment of the audience flat out hated it. If you’re one of the film’s detractors and you had hoped that the upcoming Ultimate Edition Blu-Ray would change your mind, don’t get your hopes up. According to the film’s cinematographer Larry Fong: It’s not for you.

This week saw tons of new information come forward regarding the upcoming Blu-Ray release of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. As a result, the film’s cinematographer Larry Fong took to Twitter in order to chime in about the new content, and the audience that the extended version of the film appeals to. In his opinion, the Ultimate Edition of Dawn of Justice won’t win over any new fans, but it will most certainly appeal to those who enjoyed Batman V Superman the first time around.

There’s a fairly obvious reason why he would make a statement like this. Given the current state of movie fandom, fans make up their minds about things like this quickly, and it’s incredibly difficult to dissuade them. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice came under immense fire from fans upon its release, with complaints ranging from its dark tone, to its uneven pacing, to its somewhat odd portrayal of the two titular heroes.

The extended version of the film won’t change the overall product; it will just give more content to those who already enjoyed themselves with the film. So if you're one of the people who enjoyed Batman V Superman the first time around, then you're in luck because it appears that the Ultimate Edition will definitely play to the strengths of the theatrical cut.

By my own estimation, I’m not exactly sure that Larry Fong is giving this new version of the film enough credit. It’s difficult to know for certain from the trailer, but the Ultimate Edition of Batman V Superman appears to take much more time to delve into the psyches of the two lead characters in equal measure, which could make their final showdown a much more satisfying moment when it finally occurs. It also helps that this version of the film will likely feature unprecedented levels of violence and chaos for a DC superhero movie, given the addition of an R-rating. All of this could come together to really convince some of the naysayers that Batman V Superman is better than they ever realized.

We won’t know for certain until we can finally get our hands on the R-rated version of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The Ultimate Edition Blu-Ray will on digital on June 28, followed by the physical release on July 19.
