Special Agents Mulder and Scully may be returning to movie theaters next year, but they aren’t coming alone. The X-Files characters have gotten a trio of new agents to support their investigation into the paranormal and unexplained: Amanda Peet (The Whole Nine Yards), Billy Connolly (The Last Samurai), and rapper Xzibit (Pimp My Ride).

The casting of Peet, Connolly, and Xzibit was announced by The Hollywood Reporter late in the week, although details were sparse. As you might expect from an X-Files movie, information is being kept to a minimum in order to keep the storyline somewhat secret. All that was mentioned is what we already know: this is not a direct sequel to the 1998 movie or the television series and will serve as a stand-alone story.

One note of interest: Xzibit was able to join the new X-Files picture because Oliver Stone’s Pinkville has been put on hold, a victim of the writer’s strike. Such a shame for Stone, whose movie was pulling together quite the cast in recent weeks.

Chris Carter’s X-Files movie will start filming in the next few weeks, with an expected release date next summer.
