X-Files Ending Spoiled
Oh sweet irony. After months distancing themselves from everyone who might care in an at times insane effort to keep every tiny detail of X-Files: I Want To Believe completely secret, greed has finally gotten the better of the X-Files team. Producer Frank Spotnitz has spoiled his own movie. Read no further if you won’t want it spoiled for you.
Speaking with the NJ.com, when asked whether Mulder and Scully will die in the film, Spotnitz spilled the beans and admitted that neither character gets the axe. Why would he reveal such a thing when they’ve kept every other detail of the film a secret? Why spoil something which will destroy most of the movie’s dramatic tension, since now we all know that no matter what happens it’ll all work out in the end? They want to start talking up a sequel.
After letting us know that nothing bad will happen to his movie’s main characters, Spotnitz continued, “I mean, you know, we really think there is an audience for this film. And we'd like to do another.” First they have to get someone to see this one, and The Dark Knight’s shadow looms long over the coming weekend. Good luck with that Spotnitz.
Apparently they think that romance, not imminent peril will be what sells people on their picture. Did someone recast Scully as Meg Ryan while I wasn’t looking? Reiterating some of the other hints that have been dropped over the past few months, Frank tries to set it up as a romance movie. He says, “I think what will really surprise people is how much it focuses on Mulder and Scully and on the power of their relationship... It's just them in the last scene and, you know, I find it very moving.” Forget about survival, X-Files: I Want To Believe is all about wondering if they’ll kiss. Except now, well they’ve pretty much spoiled that too. Shaking hands isn’t exactly the sort of thing you’d describe as “very moving”. Better bring a date to this one gentlemen. You don’t want to be the creepy dude sitting alone at the back while Mulder’s reading badly written love poetry.
