Remember those images from the X-Files sequel we reported on a few weeks ago? Remember how confused everyone was about these fake looking werewolves on the set of the follow up to the 1998 movie? Remember how we suggested they might be a red herring? Guess what – it looks like we were right.

Earlier today, Movieweb confirmed that the images of werewolves on the set of X-Files 2 were fake – but not the bad kind of fake. You know, the bad kind of fake that makes you question why web sites make up stuff to get traffic? No, these are the good kind of fake – the kind of fake put out specifically by people like Chris Carter to throw people off the scent. The pictures were from the set, but they also were intentionally used to keep the shroud of secrecy surrounding X-Files 2 in tact.

Tricky Chris Carter and his conniving ways. It’s players like him that make reporting on movie news so much fun, because we have to question what is authentic and what is fake, even if it includes the creator himself in the picture and the studio does its best to try and get the images removed.

Then again, you have to wonder… is this the fake out? Is Carter trying to remove attention from the leaked pictures by underplaying their significance? I don’t think that’s the case, because this response is too delayed for that to really be a factor, but the question still has to be posed.
